The colorful attire of Harb women is a stark contrast to the powerful, warlike nature of Harb men that was necessary to retain control over their territories, which included a strip along the coast of the Red Sea from Yanbu to south of Jeddah and the mountain country between Medina and Makkah.

The powerful Harb tribe owed its allegiances to the King, but paid tribute only when it suited them. In fact, in the Handbook of Hejaz, they’re described as “highwaymen, much dreaded by the pilgrimage”. They represent an important part of the Kingdom’s complex and controversial history.
